The Roadie
This is my road bike. I bought this for less than a grand, but I have thrown another grand at it in parts. It’s basically a steel and carbon Trek. It runs Dura-Ace and spins Mavic Ksyriums. It’s quiet, comfortable, and reliable. With the Ti bolts and carbon bits it’s 8.4kg.
The 29er
My newest toy. I picked this up for a bargain from a guy in Canberra. In his garage was another single speed 29er. Now I know why. This bike is a lot of fun. Its first few rides were though Mt Stromlo, and it was a revelation. You had to chisel the grin from my face. So, now I’m on the 29er bandwagon. It has also seen it’s share of upgrades, with a new carbon bars, post, hydro brakes, and lighter tubeless tyres. It went from being a 13.7kg tractor, to 12.2kg. I want this to be my go-to bike for 2010. EDIT: So far it’s served me well, and with the Fox fork it’s gone down to 11.4kg. With the Stans/240s that’s now 11.2kg.
The Track Bike
Another bargain, and completely essential purchase. Are you seeing a pattern here? This bike is light, stiff and very responsive. Apart from some Conti tyres this bike remains relatively untouched. EDIT: So, the bug has bitten and I’ve thrown some cash at this too. I have no doubt that the wheels make little difference at my level of racing, but they look cool. I’m lucky to have a velodrome practically on my doorstep. It’s a 200m concrete track that, at speed, makes you feel like you’re inside a washing machine on spin-dry. Makes for great spectating. I’m also looking forward to getting down to the Dunc Gray Velodrome for some indoor racing.
The Jekyll
This is the bike that got me back off-road. I was riding a Giant XTC that was far too small for me. I’d always wanted to ride a Lefty, and this came along at the right time. I should have never bought a bike stand with built in scales, as this just fed my weight-weenie needs. So this bike too has had various parts swapped out to get it down to a respectable 11.1kg. I like the 2×9 setup, but I may entertain the notion of a 1×9 for the local club rounds. EDIT: The arrival of the SS 29er has seen this bike all-but retired from active service. However, all is not lost, as my brother is keen to head out to Glenrock with some mates.
